Local legend has it that the name Welling came from the era of horse-drawn vehicles and carriages. It could be said you were "well in" to Kent, or had a "well end" to the journey up and down Shooters Hill which, at the time was much steeper back then, had a poor road surface and was a notorious haunt of highwaymen.
The top of Shooters Hill which boarders Welling, Eltham, Kidbrook and Woolwich was ‘shaved off’ becuase it was too steep and high. The top was moved to the nearby Army barracks in Woolwich.
It is rumoured that the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin frequently visited the Inn that used be on east Wickham open space. It was called ‘fanny on the hill’ because Fanny who used the live at the Inn would put a light in the window to let Dick Turpin know if there were soldiers at the Inn or not.
The principal town in the Borough of Dartford is unsurprisingly called Dartford. Dartford has been a market town since medieval times and although today it is principally a commuter town for Greater London, It still has an outside market running most days of the week. It has a long history of religious, industrial and cultural importance. The Dartford crossing is near by which links Essex with northwest Kent and the areas of Greenhithe, Crayford, Darenth, Bexleyheath and dartford.
One of the most notable things Dartford is known for is that it’s the birthplace of Rolling Stones singer/songwriter Mick Jagger and guitarist/second vocalist Keith Richards. The Mick Jagger Centre at the dartford Grammar School is a platform for dartford-based music and arts. Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall and HRH Duke of Kent, opened the facility in 1998.
