Eltham Palace: A Historic Treasure
One of the most iconic landmarks in Eltham is the stunning Eltham Palace. The original medieval palace still stands today, with the breathtaking Great Hall showcasing a magnificent hammer-beam roof, built over 500 years ago during the reign of Edward IV.
The history of Eltham Palace dates back to 1305, when it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book and later granted to Edward II. Over the years, it became one of the most beloved royal residences, surrounded by more than 1,000 acres of deer park. It’s even said that Henry VIII spent part of his childhood here!
In the 1930s, the millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld transformed Eltham Palace into a lavish Art Deco home, preserving its rich history while introducing modern style and luxury. Fun fact: they even had a pet lemur!
Now days Eltham palace has 19 acres of beautiful gardens that was a gold winner in the 2017 London Bloom Awards. There is also a café, shop situated in a glasshouse.
Famous Faces from Eltham
Eltham is home to many notable figures, but perhaps the most famous of all is Bob Hope. Born in Craigton Road, Eltham, in 1903, Bob Hope moved to the United States at the age of four but always maintained strong ties to Britain. His love for his hometown led to the idea of funding a theatre for young people in Eltham. As a result, Eltham Little Theatre was founded in 1943 to promote drama, arts, and music in the area. In 1979, when the theatre was struggling financially and at risk of closing, Bob Hope stepped in to help, preserving a cultural treasure for the community.
Eltham has also been home to some incredible musical talent. One of the most iconic names is Kate Bush, the legendary singer and songwriter who made waves in the late ’70s and early ‘80s. Known for hits like “Wuthering Heights”, “The Man with the Child in His Eyes”, and her collaboration with Peter Gabriel on “Don’t Give Up”, Kate Bush spent her childhood in Welling, at East Wickham Farm on Wickham Street. Though born in Bexleyheath, she later returned to Eltham, buying a large house in Court Road after finding success.
Another famous Eltham resident is Boy George, the lead singer of the iconic ‘80s band Culture Club. Best known for hits like “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, Boy George lived on the Middle Park Estate for a time, just down the road from where I grew up. Born in Bexleyheath in 1961, George O’Dowd (aka Boy George) has had a successful career spanning decades, from his rise to fame in the ’80s to his successful DJing career in Ibiza and around the world in the ’90s and 2000s.
